A girlfriend of mine and I parted ways in February. Shortly after my landlord found out, she recommended I introduce myself to another tenant of the building, although, the landlord wasn't sure whether said tenant had a boyfriend or not.

I completely forgot about this.

In April, I was feeling a bit depressed one Thursday evening, and ended up consuming a sizable amount of rum before getting a phone call from a friend to go out for caffeinated evilness. After a couple of hours with the friend and some others, I headed home, still intoxicated from the earlier rum.

There she was. It was midnight, and she was sitting there on the steps of the front porch, clad entirely in black, writing in her journal. I would not have noticed her at all if not for the white pages of the journal and her porcelain skin. I'm usually not very forward around people I don't know, but I was drunk, and hey, it was suddenly my birthday.

"Mind if I sit down?" "It's your house, too."

We made our introductions and chatted for a bit. She was noticably guarded, and threw in that she had a boyfriend about ten seconds into the conversation, although I hadn't mentioned anything that should have provoked the thought. After chatting for about four hours, we parted ways, returning to our respective apartments.

We started hanging out every few days. I found out more about her life. She'd moved to my town to attend the local community college and be closer to her boyfriend, but in the four months since she'd been here she'd only seen him twice. Something smelled fishy to me, but I have a general rule... I don't mess around with happy relationships. At that point, I was glad merely to have a new friend.

Then something.. odd.. happened. I was hanging out with her and a younger male friend of hers, watching a movie. I kissed her, and while she returned the kiss, she quickly followed it with "I can't, I have a boyfriend." I sighed, and returned to watching the movie. Unfortunately, I fell asleep on her bed. I woke up several hours later to the sounds of a female in the throes of an orgasm. I was confused at first, then I noticed where my left hand was, and what it was doing.

Oops.

I went back to sleep. In the morning, I wasn't even sure it had happened. She didn't mention it, there wasn't any noticable womanscent on my hand, I chalked it off to a dream. I proceeded to return back to my apartment and take a nap.

Apparently, she wasn't sure whether it had happened or not, either, as she had been asleep for most of it as well. The only witness to the event was, of course, her young male friend who was also sleeping in the room.

She and chatted things over for a bit, and we came to the conclusion that she was going to stay with her boyfriend, and that we couldn't let anything like that happen again, and that we shouldn't let it ruin our friendship.

At this point, the other tenants in the building started letting slip that she had a thing for me.

I talked to her. In my head, I had decided that if she was to leave her boyfriend for me, then I wouldn't want her, because she would be the sort of girl that just ups and leaves her man for someone else. But if she didn't leave her man, she obviously didn't want me. She was damned either way, in my mind.

I decided to find out more about this absentee boyfriend. All I had was a name and the fact that he worked at the local mall. Luckily, I had other friends that worked at the mall. I checked up on him, found out that he was bad news and had a habit of keeping multiple girlfriends. Even had two kids by one of them.

I picked a great time to tell her, too. When I got home, she was hanging out on the front porch with a bunch of the neighbors. I took her into her apartment, and revealed my findings to her. She took it rather well. I went outside to the front porch to chat amicably with the neighbors. One of them whispered "She really likes you, you know." to which I quickly replied "Not right now, she doesn't." I couldn't have timed it any better. A bottle immediately flew out of her window, which was on the side of the house, and shattered into pieces on the sidewalk below.

She ended up not being sure whether to trust me. I don't fault her for this. I had gone from being a neutral friend to someone who had a high probability of trying to get into her knickers.

The following Thursday, she decided to leave him. The next day, she saw the wedding announcement.
